EQ + Compression Essentials for Music Production is a short online course to improve your EQ and Compression skills. I found it on SkillShare when I wanted to learn how to use equalization properly. And I’m very lucky, because the curriculum covers both Parametric EQ and Graphic EQ, as well as Compression Essentials. And it took me about 60 minutes to complete (not including the project, which is also here)!
What you will learn at “EQ + Compression Essentials for Music Production”
What is equalization
How to use Parametric EQ
How to use Graphic EQ
What is compression
What you need to know about compression
How to use compression plugins
Equalization is the process of adjusting the balance between different frequency components within an audio signal. An equalizer allows you to control the levels of bass, midrange, and treble frequencies in an audio signal. Compression is the process of reducing the dynamic range of an audio signal. This results in a more consistent overall volume level.
Equalization and compression seem like easy processes. For some, it’s enough to just test the plug-ins built into a DAW (like FL Studio) and they’ll figure it out quickly. However, even my basic course was not enough for me, so I decided to learn about equalization separately, and I found even more than I was looking for.
Who teaches “EQ + Compression Essentials for Music Production”
Tomas George is a UK Music Producer, Audio Engineer and Composer. He has a MMus Masters Degree in Music Production and a BA(Hons) in Music Composition, and has been writing and producing music for over 10 years.
I liked how clearly Tomas talks about equalization and compression: what it is, what types of equalizers there are, how to use plugins for equalization and compression. He has a pleasant voice, the optimal pace of conversation. He clearly explains every important point, says that he likes Logic Pro X a lot (really likes it), but also says that the information can be used with any DAW (it’s true, I use FL Studio).
